Of all the things this country is synonymous with, its pubs are certainly near the top of the list. The classic British boozer is a national institution and London is certainly not short of them. But how many have you ever actually visited and did you take time to look at the building around you?

Your host will have hand-selected a three or four pubs, all within close walking distance, with an interesting story to tell - it might be the setting for a notable moment in history, a unique piece of architecture, or have connections to the famous or the infamous! And it might just be tucked down a side street you never even knew was there. What they’ll all have in common is a pint of warm English beer…other drinks also available!

The Plan

Your host will meet you at 7:00pm at the first pub in the crawl, The Elgin, with some unexpected facts about your historic haunt. Never has knowledge been so much fun fun.

Formerly home to London’s émigré West Indian community, in the face of appalling racism and discrimination, it was they who established the now world-famous Notting Hill Carnival to celebrate Caribbean culture. First held in 1965, today it attracts a million visitors every year. Sadly, gentrification has largely driven out the culture that made the area so vibrant, ‘progress’ made compete by Richard Curtis’s eponymous 1999 movie. Nevertheless, it’s still home to a bunch of beautiful pubs, though we can’t guarantee Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts will be among the clientele…
