The legacy of Kubrick’s career is the focus of a new exhibition at Somerset House where participating artists have been invited to respond to a film, scene, character or theme from the Kubrick archives.

Inspired by the desire to marry music and the visual arts, curator James Lavelle has added creators from the worlds of design, graffiti and electronic dance music to a roster of well-known artists to create work inspired by Kubrick’s films. These experiences are combined under one roof to create the ultimate multi-sensory environment unprecedented by museum exhibitions or music festivals..

The maverick American director turned big budget film making into a personal and unpredictable art form, redefining every genre he touched. His pathological attention to detail is part of the reason his legacy is so enduring, his influence so ubiquitous, not just among film makers but in wider popular culture. Every item on his sets was scrutinised and agonised over. Kubrick had a vision, and woe betide anyone who tried to keep him from realising it.
